Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Treatment Devices:  Implantable Pumps Market

Dublin, CA, October 5, 2010 - Marketstrat is pleased to announce the release of a new report titled, “Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Treatment Devices Markets Worldwide."

The market for ED devices is growing slowly but steadily, projected to approach $430 million by the end of 2010, according to a recently released report by Marketstrat Inc.

Increasing numbers of men are turning to surgical options for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment.  Medical management with drugs like Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etc., is not always effective and not without side effects.  Implantable and external pump devices offer an effective alternative.  The report emphasizes that while vacuum pumps are widely known and an infinite number of brands available for purchase through internet-based vendors, there are few models that are approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA.   Greater acceptance of vacuum pumps by the patient community is due to the fact that surgery is not required and there is no risk of infection.  However, in terms of clinical efficacy, implantable pumps outpace vacuum pumps.  The implantable pumps segment that includes inflatable and malleable prostheses is therefore the fastest growing, with inflatable pumps accounting for over 78 percent of the world ED devices market.

Aging and aging-related chronic disorders like diabetes and Parkinson’s disease may cause ED that can go undetected unless the patient is ready to seek help.  Growing awareness of ED treatment options is encouraging men to consult their doctors.  Another common cause of ED is prostate surgery for cancer or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).    Men who undergo prostate surgery are typically counseled about ED and offered the option of having an implant during the same procedure.

American Medical Systems (AMS) and Coloplast are the undisputed leaders in this space with few competitors.  Both offer implantable prostheses.  Leaders in the vacuum pumps market include Timm Medical, Pos-T-Vac, August Medical, Own Mumford and Bonro Medical.  The report from Marketstrat Inc. discusses market trends, competitor rankings and provides market forecasts for inflatable pumps, malleable pumps and vacuum pumps.
