The world market for arthroscopy devices is expected to reach $2.24 billion by the end of 2008, growing at a rate of 6.6 percent per year during the 2006-2014 period.

Dublin, CA, September 2, 2008 - Marketstrat is pleased announce the release of a newly updated report titled, “World Arthroscopy Devices Markets 2008."

Smith & Nephew is the market leader in the arthroscopy space, other leading players being Arthrex, Arthrocare, Biomet, Davol, DePuy/Mitek, Stryker, and Linvatec/Conmed.

Continued growth is expected in this market over the next few years, primarily due to increased demand for minimally invasive procedures, physician preference, increases in orthopedic problems in particular those associated with aging or sports in younger people, and demand for resorbable products.

Hip and small-joint (ankle, wrist) arthroscopy present emerging, previously undertapped markets as arthroscopic techniques gain momentum in hard-to access areas. Arthroscopic repair is the fastest growing segment and therapeutic arthroscopy is outpacing diagnostic procedures. The US will remain the largest market overall for the foreseeable future.

Europe and APAC regions including Japan are among the fastest growing regional markets where demand for minimally invasive procedures is on the rise. Reimbursement barriers for ambulatory surgical centers are expected to be reduced in the US. Momentum toward ambulatory surgery centers continues enabling greater access to arthroscopy. Entry barriers are high although sports-medicine related products are an exception. Small-joint arthroscopy is another possible entry point for new players. The drive to develop new technologies and new procedures continues. Focus of innovation will be on biologic glues and tissue, resorptive materials, multi-function instruments, and knotless systems.

Sports injuries are increasing, particularly in younger populations.  US data indicate that team sports and fitness activities are the most common causes.  The most common sports related injuries are knee (ACL tears) and shoulder injuries (Rotator Cuff).

Key technology trends include: Resorbable / Biodegradable Materials – Anchors, Sutures, Scaffolds; Positioning Systems; Robotic Arthroscopy; and Knotless Anchors.

One of the most important trends in arthroscopy has been the development of resorbable, biodegradable materials such as implants for reattaching tendons and ligaments to bone such as sutures and anchors, implants to promote tissue regeneration and healing such as grafts and scaffolds etc.  These devices are composed of biological materials such as hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate that are naturally absorbed by the body over the course of healing. Since they are naturally absorbed within one to two years,  surgical removal is not required.

Biodegradable suture anchors have both facilitated and revolutionized arthroscopic tissue-to-bone repair, especially in the knee and shoulder. New materials are not only biodegradable and biocompatible, but also have greater strength and superior qualities.  Mechanical strength and biodegradability are important characteristics of these materials.  Development of new compounds is aimed at reducing some of the complications arising from these implants such as problems with biocompatibility.

Robotic surgery for arthroscopy,  called Arthrobotics by some, is fast gaining ground. In addition to  improving access to joints, it also translates to less trauma for the patient and shorter hospital stays.  Current systems allow automated motion of the arthroscope, position sensors to guide it, and force sensors for tissue proximity control. It is expected that in the future arthrobotic systems will be used for complete joint replacement.
